Hands-on Experiences. Freshwater Innovation. Future Careers.

Whether learning to fish, studying the ecology of the Great Lakes or getting inspired for a career in freshwater sciences, Discovery Pier invites you to discover the beauty and wonder of the Great Lakes. Through strong collaborative partnerships, innovative programming and a universally-accessible site, we provide hands-on experiences for all to engage with the largest system of freshwater in the world.

Learn to Fish

Our pier is open to all for fishing on Lake Michigan, and our accessible railings make casting and netting your catch easier for all ages and abilities.

Looking for fishing instruction for kids? Our Discover Fishing at the Pier Program provides hands-on learning for ages 7-14 in basic fishing skills, including casting and knot tying, food web study and pier-based fishing techniques. This program is provided in partnership with Inland Seas Education Association, Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Northwest Michigan Fishing Club.
